Use of genetically modified food and feed (A8-0305/2015 - Giovanni La Via)

Marlene Mizzi (S&D), in writing. ‒ I expressed strong concerns with regard to the Commission approach on an opt-out option for the use of genetically modified food and feed. In my opinion the practical implementation of such a process and its administrative burden are still not clear due to the non-existence of an impact assessment, the incompatibility of Member State opt-out measures with internal market and WTO rules, the failure to ensure legal certainty and the question of the proposal’s ‘implementability’ in general. Last but not least, this option could be misleading for both the consumer and the relevant industries. Therefore, I supported the rapporteur’s approach in rejecting the Commission proposal.
