Use of genetically modified food and feed (A8-0305/2015 - Giovanni La Via)

Pavel Telička (ALDE), in writing.Today, all genetically modified organisms need authorisation before they can be placed on the EU market. However, a qualified majority among the Member States has never been reached either in favour of or against any authorisation proposal put forward by the Commission. The Commission has therefore concluded that the legal framework for decision making on genetically modified (GM) food and feed needs to be adapted. The Member States would thus be allowed to restrict or prohibit the use of genetically modified food and feed on their territory, despite it being authorised at EU level.

I voted in favour of Amendment 1 calling for the rejection of the Commission’s proposal. By this vote I expressed my serious concerns about the proposal. The Commission proposed more flexibility for the Member States to limit or ban the use of GM food and feed on their territory. Under this regulation, Member States could block the free circulation of feed, which would have a negative impact on the internal market (in violation of Article 34 TFEU).
