President. – I want to inform the House that tomorrow, 25 November 2015, is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls. The United Nations started the initiative to illuminate landmarks in orange all over the world to raise global awareness for this important issue. The European Parliament is proud to take part in this initiative and will light up in orange starting tonight until tomorrow midnight. In this way we, as the European Parliament, want to stand up against violence against women and girls. This violence is one of the most cruel violations of women’s rights and therefore we need to unite efforts to eliminate it.

In this context, I would like to pay tribute once again to last year’s Sakharov laureate, Dr Mukwege: to his exceptional work as a doctor, but also to his strong message, speaking out against violence and impunity and calling every day for justice and the protection of Congolese women.

The European Parliament and in particular the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) has organised a series of activities for tomorrow, in cooperation with the Commission and the Council of Europe. You are all invited to attend and to participate in these events.
