Breeding animals and their germinal products (A8-0288/2015 - Michel Dantin)

Pavel Telička (ALDE), in writing. ‒ I voted in favour of this the proposal to put in place zootechnical and genealogical rules for trade in and imports into the EU of their breeding animals and their germinal products. Breeding plays a key role in conserving rare breeds and thereby in protecting biodiversity. However, efforts to achieve competitiveness should not lead to the disappearance of breeds with characteristics adapted to specific natural contexts. These rules will enable the preservation and improvement of animal breeding, as well as rules for the conservation and improvement of native or endangered breeds. Agreeing on a definition of the concept of ‘breed’ would be useful to clarify the common legal framework. This would also be facilitated through greater cross-border cooperation.
