EU-Ghana Stepping Stone Economic Partnership Agreement (A8-0328/2016 - Christofer Fjellner)

Liadh Ní Riada (GUE/NGL), in writing. – I voted against this report as I believe it will disadvantage Ghana. The report was on establishing a transitional trade deal between the EU and Ghana while the EU-West Africa Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations are still underway. The trade deal voted on is an Economic Partnership Agreement. The EU has been using these EPAs with African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries in order to force the liberalisation of their economies without providing any new benefit to them.

The ACP countries already have access to the EU market but in recent years the EPA deals struck by Europe open access to the poorer countries to the EU without factoring in the massive inequality between the partners. This agreement will be detrimental to the majority of people of Ghana and it does not contain a sustainable development chapter.
