Partnership Agreement between the EU and EAEC and Armenia - Partnership Agreement between the EU and EAEC and Armenia (resolution) (debate)

Frank Engel (PPE). – Mr President, I say to the Vice-President / High Representative that I am not absolutely certain when Russia bullied Armenia out of the negotiations for a deep and comprehensive free trade area that we were engaged in. But relatively soon afterwards they came back into this agreement negotiation format, relatively shortly afterwards in political terms, we were able to conclude this agreement with them.

I am happy that we now have it because we now need it. We need it more than ever because we are confronted with a new Armenian Government that is determined to settle down to the task, and the task is daunting. All the things that we can do for this country now need to be done better than they used to be done in the past, and that also had to do with corrupt governmental practices and the impossibility of channelling EU funds – which were always there abundantly – to where they were most desperately needed.

All of this now needs to be done, and I would like to reiterate something that has been said already, because I know from the prime minister and other members of the new Armenian Government that this is what they are really looking forward to. We need to try and make headway on the visa liberalisation front. This is also what the Armenian people would expect.
