  Rupert Matthews (ECR). – Madam President, I was very pleased to vote for this report which is changing the way that fisheries are controlled in the Western Approaches. I think everyone here recognises the common fisheries policy over the years has been catastrophic for the European fishing industry, it has led to a collapse in stocks, it has led to unemployment, it has led to untold hardship.

Pushing control away from a centralised top-down approach to a regionalised approach has got to be the right idea. I’m very pleased to see this being brought in in the western oceans, where of course fishermen from Britain are very active. I think it is a shame, however, that the European Union still cannot quite bring itself to put control over the fisheries into the hands of smaller entities, of the nations themselves, because it is they who not only understand the fisheries but have a stake in making sure it is sustainable. I hope very much that after Brexit we at least will be able to achieve that in Britain.

  Clara Eugenia Aguilera García (S&D). – Señora presidenta, si algo tiene de positivo este informe —que tiene muchos aspectos—, es que efectivamente lo estamos aprobando, lo hemos aprobado en este Pleno antes del Brexit. Por tanto, las aguas occidentales del Atlántico van a quedar bien reguladas con un plan de gestión multianual de pesca y, además, hemos conseguido aprobarlo a tiempo. Creo que tiene aspectos muy positivos, como dar una mayor estabilidad a las pesquerías de aguas occidentales.

Es verdad que, en un principio, a nosotros nos hubiera gustado que hubiese una división entre norte y sur. Pero bien está así como ha quedado finalmente, entendiendo que va a dar estabilidad a este sector pesquero. Estamos hablando de más de 4 000 buques; por lo tanto, es una zona muy importante. También nos hubiera gustado que hubiese recogido una mayor limitación de la pesca recreativa frente a la pesca profesional, pero, insisto, es el cumplimiento de la PPC y, finalmente, este plan de gestión va a ser bueno para el futuro del sector pesquero del Atlántico.
