Rory Palmer (S&D). – Madam President, I didn’t do Erasmus when I was at university, and I wish I had. I really, really want Erasmus opportunities to be available to young people from all backgrounds in the UK into the future. And how appalling is it: here we are, almost three years on from the referendum, and the UK Government has failed – failed to negotiate, failed to give any clarity or certainty that the UK will continue to be part of the Erasmus programme in the future. Young people that I listen to across the East Midlands region are furious about how their futures are being compromised, how their rights and opportunities are being short-changed by this government’s failure of these past two years or so. If we get to the point of the question of Brexit being put back to the people, it is therefore fair and appropriate and right that those young people, including 16 and 17 year olds, get to have their say.

Andrejs Mamikins (S&D). – Madam President, Erasmus + is a life-changing initiative and it can certainly be called an EU success. But this is a success only for 3.7% of young Europeans who benefit from Erasmus. I ask myself, what is your proposal for the remaining 96.3%? Erasmus was never thought to be an elitist project, but it turned out that people from lower socio-economic backgrounds are often left outside. This has also been the case of Latvia, so I wish that Erasmus + becomes more democratic and easily accessible. We need to diversify the profiles of applicants, we need to reduce the bureaucracy and we need to carefully observe how professional excellence is generated. I support the rapporteur Zver in his call to triple Erasmus funding, compared with the Commission proposal to double it. I’m following the process closely and I hope the delay in negotiations will not jeopardise the result.

(Președinta a retras cuvântul vorbitoarei)
