Turkish drilling activities in EU waters in the Eastern Mediterranean (debate)

Antony Hook (Renew). – Madam President, we welcome the Council’s decision to adopt sanctions in response to Turkey’s continued and illegal drilling in Cypriot territorial waters. Once again this Parliament must condemn Turkish actions. This latest infringement shows that the Turkish government is not respecting either the rule of law or the territory of other states. The EU will and must show solidarity with its Member State Cyprus, and following October’s Turkish military operations in northeast Syria, we called for action to be taken – strong action. How many more violations of international law must there be before we act?

The European Parliament will show that our citizens will not condone either an illegal invasion or this illegal drilling. Let us send a clear message to Ankara and formally end Turkey’s status as an EU candidate country.
