Conclusions of the European Council meeting of 12 and 13 December 2019 (debate)

Pedro Marques (S&D), in writing. – We have to start delivering on the goal of carbon neutrality. Such an ambitious goal needs proper resources to promote and support the transition. We can find those resources, and at the same time avoid importing carbon and avoid endangering responsible European investment.

An ambitious budget for the future – that is what we need. We need to put our money where our mouth is. One first and very important moment will be the way the Just Transition Fund will support the transition in all Europe, and where the money will come from. We will be very attentive on the proposal. We need to fight for agreements, avoid blockages at the Council, for this Europe to evolve.

Banking Union is to be completed; more importantly, EMU is to be completed and a stabilisation mechanism within the EU budget is absolutely necessary. These are truly strong objectives, but bold action was again promised today by the President of the Commission, which as a member of this political family I acknowledge and support. Let us unite around the future of this European project. We wish all the best for the endeavours of the new President of the Council.
