Lyme disease

Question for written answer  E-001998/2024/rev.1
to the Commission
Rule 144
Kathleen Funchion (The Left), Lynn Boylan (The Left)

Lyme disease is among the most common zoonotic diseases in Europe. Infected ticks and the disease are spreading geographically, with a significant increase in the number of cases even being reported in Ireland. The changing climate is suspected to be one of the contributing factors to the rise in diagnosed cases of the disease.

In 2018, Parliament passed a resolution on Lyme disease which included a call on Member States to establish an information and awareness campaign to alert their populations and all those concerned to the existence of Lyme disease, and invited Member States to call on the Commission’s logistical support if needed.

What measures could the Commission take with regard to Lyme disease, which is described in Parliament’s resolution of 15 November 2018 as the most common zoonosis in Europe and in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/892 as a high risk disease?
