Decarbonisation investments in the steel sector

Question for written answer E-002694/2024
to the Commission
Rule 144
Brigitte van den Berg (Renew)
ArcelorMittal has announced that it is postponing several plans to invest in cleaner steel-production facilities. Similar investments by other firms are also lagging behind. This is one of many alarming developments in this sector. It is essential that Europe has a future-proof steel sector that is competitive and sustainable. The sooner we start the transition to green steel production, the better. The announcement referred to several issues, including the scope of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the state of green hydrogen production and carbon capture, utilisation and storage.
- 1.What can the Commission do to assure the industry that hydrogen production and infrastructure are being developed and that hydrogen will become available at a competitive price?
- 2.What options is the Commission considering to expand the scope of the CBAM following the 2025 review, and how quickly can these be implemented?
- 3.Will the Commission consider using coordinated state-aid tools, such as important projects of common European interest, to accelerate the decarbonisation of the steel industry?
