Housing: unfair competition between public authorities and increased tourist pressure in Galicia
5.3.2025
Question for written answer E-000952/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Ana Miranda Paz (Verts/ALE)
Pressure from tourism on housing continues unabated in Galicia. Rent prices and tourist pressure are increasing, and the number of holiday rentals is growing steadily. As I stated in a written question in December 2014 (E-003059/2024)[1], the city of Santiago de Compostela, the end of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), the capital of Galicia and a major European city, has already taken measures to alleviate the housing crisis and the unlawful use of tourist accommodation. Now A Coruña and Vigo, Galicia’s two largest cities, which count almost 7 000 and more than 9 000 holiday rentals respectively, are taking a similar course of action. The Galician government does not yet have an register of holiday rentals in the autonomous community, which aggravates the housing situation and causes unfair competition between its various public authorities.
In the light of the above:
- 1.Is the Commission aware of this state of affairs, which runs counter to Regulation (EU) 2024/1028 on data collection and sharing relating to short-term accommodation?
- 2.What view does the Commission take of the unfair competition between public authorities in such a sensitive area, especially at a time when simplification, efficiency and budgetary effectiveness are to be our watchwords?
