Parliamentary question - E-3469/2005Parliamentary question

The Tibetan 11th Panchen Lama

by Bronisław Geremek (ALDE)
to the Commission

In the light of concerns repeatedly shown by the EU about the preservation of the cultural, religious and linguistic identity of the Tibetan people (vide the recent European Commission Representative's statement on the situation in Tibet presented in the EP on 10 March 2005 and the EP resolutions: P6_TA(2005)0339; P6_TA(2005)0010; P6_TA(2004)0067; B4‑1499, 1516, 1522, 1544 and 1556/95; B4‑0963, 0979, 0983, 1003, 1007 and 1011/95); pointing out that the year 2005 has been declared as the International Year of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, I take the liberty to ask whether the Commission has any information about Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, recognised as the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet, who has been kept in Chinese custody for the last 10 years at an undisclosed location, and also whether any effort has been made to appoint (as postulated in the EP resolution B4‑0076 and 0097/98) an EU Special Representative for Tibetan affairs.
