EU regulations concerning new ‘Islamic’ cars

WRITTEN QUESTION E-6597/07
by Mario Borghezio (UEN)
to the Commission

The Iranian carmaker ‘Iran Khodro’ (in partnership with Renault) has announced that a new car with built-in Islamic religious symbols will appear on various markets in 2011. These include — albeit as options — a compass indicating the direction of Mecca and a special compartment for the Koran.

That car can be expected to compete not only in Islamic countries, but also in the EU. Has the Commission received any requests from European carmakers to issue new directives enabling vehicles to be fitted with technology that allows direction-finding towards Mecca, or any requests to update and adapt current global guidance systems to ‘Islamic’ satellites?

What guidelines does the Commission intend to set in this regard?
