WRITTEN QUESTION E-4222/09
by Athanasios Plevris (EFD)
to the Commission

Subject: Respect for human rights in Albania
 Answer in writing

Courts in Albania, a country which aspires to EU membership, have recently sentenced members of the Greek minority for singing the Greek national anthem and holding up the Greek flag. They have also sentenced the mayor of Himarë, a member of the Greek minority, on the grounds that he replaced road signs in areas which, in accordance with international agreements, should have been bilingual (Albanian and Greek), and this was not the case.

In view of the above, will the Commission say:

1. Is it aware of the judgments in question? How can they be squared with the country's aspirations to join the EU?
2. How does it assess the standards of respect for human rights in Albania, in particular those of the Greek minority? Has there been any progress?
