Protection of the ancient temple of Artemis Agrotera in Athens

WRITTEN QUESTION E-4300/09
by Athanasios Plevris (EFD)
to the Commission

The ancient Greek temple of Artemis Agrotera in Athens (5th century B.C.) is under threat from plans for real estate development on part or the whole of the site, even though it is one of the most important historical and archaeological monuments in Athens, and within European civilisation in general. The importance and enormous historical value of this site has been highlighted since the 18th century by eminent Greeks and other European scientists, who have also written academic theses on the subject.

1. Does the Commission know whether real estate development on this site is contrary to international law and international agreements on the protection of cultural monuments?

2. Will the Commission take initiatives to protect this ancient temple and prevent its destruction?
