Parliamentary question - E-5023/2009(ASW)Parliamentary question

Answer given by Mr Dimas on behalf of the Commission

The Commission is aware of the annual dolphin hunt (drive fishery) in Japan.

Regarding point 2 of the Honourable Member's question, the Commission would like to confirm that the products referred to in the Honourable Members question are not allowed to enter into the EU. The introduction of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoise) and relevant products into the EU for primarily commercial purpose is banned, pursuant to Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97 of 9 December 1996 on the protection of species of wild fauna and flora by regulating trade therein[1], which implements the provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in the EU.

Regarding the Honourable Member's third question, the Commission would like to refer to the answer already given above to point 2.
