E-5186/09
WRITTEN QUESTION E-5186/09
by Fiorello Provera (EFD)
to the Council

Subject: EU permanent seat on the UN Security Council
 Answer in writing

According to the German weekly Der Spiegel the future German Government might call for a permanent UN Security Council seat to be assigned to the EU and hence drop the demand put forward by the outgoing Government for a permanent seat for Germany. A request to the same effect has, moreover, previously been made by the Italian Government.

Does the Council know about this political initiative?

Does any plan along similar lines exist at EU level?

If the EU were to be given its own permanent seat, would France and the United Kingdom consequently have to forgo their permanent seats?
