E-5397/2009(ASW)
Answer given by Mr Dimas on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-5397/2009

According to information available to the Commission the route of the motorway in question would cut through several Natura 2000 sites (Koilada kai ekvoles Spercheiou — Maliakos kolpos — GR2440002, Antihasia-Meteora — GRl440003, Pineios-Antihasia — GRl440005) as well as certain breeding and resting places of species (namely the brown bear and the wolf) that are strictly protected under the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC(1).

Considering that the E65 motorway has been earmarked as a major project to be co-financed under the Structural Funds, the Commission will in that context seek specific information from the Greek authorities on the impact assessment carried out for the project, including the consideration of alternatives and mitigation measures, in order to verify whether relevant provisions on site and species protection under Articles 6 and 12 respectively of the directive have been complied with.

(1)Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora, OJ L 206, 22.7.1992.
