Subject: Video of a dog thrown from a bridge
 Answer in writing

An Internet video has recently begun to circulate which shows a dog being thrown from a bridge in what seems to be eastern Europe. The video can be accessed via the following link:

This blatant act of cruelty appears to have been committed simply for sadistic pleasure, but such acts need to be stopped immediately in order to ensure the protection of animal rights and indeed the integrity of the EU.

This issue is part of a much wider problem in 21st century Europe, which is the humane treatment of animals. Every year millions of animals suffer unnecessarily as they travel thousands of kilometres across Europe to slaughter. The animals are given insufficient food and water, often none at all, and insufficient rest. Such a trip, depending on the place of departure, can last from 20 to 70 hours. That is a long road to Calvary.

Will the Commission ensure an appropriate response to the footage of animal cruelty mentioned by taking up the issue strongly with the relevant authorities in the video's country of origin? On a wider level, will the Commission lend further support to stronger animal rights?
