Subject: Measures to reduce or exterminate exogenous invasive species
 Answer in writing

Many experts consider exogenous invasive species to be the second most serious threat to global biodiversity, anticipating that the problems caused by them will be aggravated by climate change and increased trade and tourism. Such species bring about changes to existing ecosystems, impacting on the other species forming part of it, reduce agricultural output and require major outlay by the new Member States. According to initial estimates, the total resulting annual expenditure for Europe exceeds EUR 10 billion.

1. What strategy is being adopted by the EU with regard to these species?

2. What measures are being envisaged by the Commission to monitor high-risk areas so as to detect the presence of exogenous species in time and adopt the necessary measures to eradicate them?
