to the Commission

Subject: Harmonisation of legislation on animal protection and welfare
 Answer in writing

In Romania, animal protection is regulated by Law 60/2004 ratifying the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals, Law 205/2004 on animal protection, and Law 9/2008 complementing Law 205/2005, and also by a number of government decisions. Nonetheless, these laws are not being observed properly by either the population or the authorities, and are thus in reality simply not effective.

Although the legislation of Member States does not vary significantly, there are major variations in the implementation of the national and European legislation on the matter.

What measures will the Commission propose for greater harmonisation of standards for animal protection and welfare in the Member States?
