WRITTEN QUESTION E-2994/10
by Elena Oana Antonescu (PPE)
to the Commission

Subject: Adaptation of EU legislation against risk factors leading to musculoskeletal disorders
 Answer in writing

Over 40 million workers in Europe suffer from work-related musculoskeletal disorders, and these are the most important cause of absenteeism. The direct costs of such disorders are estimated to be as much as 2 % of GDP at European level(1).

At present, the risk factors which generate those disorders are governed by a multiplicity of rules, which do not cover all workplace situations or all risk factors which might lead to musculoskeletal disorders.

In its legislative programme, the Commission undertook to propose, in the first quarter of 2010, an initiative for the unification of the legislative framework for the protection of employees' health and safety in the workplace vis-à-vis musculoskeletal disorders.

Can the Commission provide information on the results of the continuation of the second phase of consultations with the social partners on this initiative? What are the conclusions of the opinion of the Advisory Committee on Health and Safety at Work on this initiative? When will the Commission submit a proposal for an initiative on musculoskeletal disorders?
