Black market trade in dog meat

WRITTEN QUESTION E-3209/10
by Syed Kamall (ECR)
to the Commission

I have been contacted by constituents who are concerned about what they call the ‘black market production of dog meat’, and its accompanying brutality in the Philippines.

They tell me that eating dogs has been illegal there since 1998, when the RA 8485 (the Philippine Animal Welfare Act) was enacted. However due to lack of enforcement, live dogs and dog meat are still sold openly in markets and restaurants.

Could the Commission confirm if it is putting any pressure on the Philippine government to take action on this illegal trade and to safeguard the welfare of dogs in the Philippines?
