Preventing skin cancer through stricter regulations on the use of tanning studios
2.7.2010
Question for written answer E-5444/2010
to the Commission
Rule 117
Elena Oana Antonescu (PPE)
Using sunbeds can lead to a significantly increased risk of skin cancer.
However, those providing tanning services do not always take sufficient steps to inform or warn consumers that exposure to ultraviolet rays can be dangerous for people with certain skin types and a genetic predisposition.
The conclusions of a recent study carried out by the Commission in 10 Member States[1] indicate that the current regulations at Community level and the way in which these have been implemented have proved ineffective in combating hazardous exposure to ultraviolet rays.
Does the Commission consider it desirable to propose a recommendation on the regulation of tanning services aimed at ensuring that consumers receive an examination by a medical specialist before being given access to such services?
