Animal welfare in Zakynthos
1.9.2010
Question for written answer E-7019/2010
to the Commission
Rule 117
Ashley Fox (ECR)
The island of Zakynthos is well known for its natural beauty but several of my local constituents have raised concerns about a less well-known problem prevalent across the island, namely the widespread presence of stray cats and dogs. These animals have been thrown out of homes and due to a lack of interest in caring for the animals they have since bred and increased in number year on year. The animals live in appalling conditions, relying on the charity of local people and tourists.
Please could the Commission answer the following questions:
- 1.What steps is the Greek Government taking to care for these discarded and ignored former pets?
- 2.What plans does the Commission have to ensure that the Greek Government takes appropriate steps to permanently resolve this issue?
