EU financial contribution to building an LNG terminal in Świnoujście

Question for written answer E-7511/2010
to the Commission
Rule 117
Reinhard Bütikofer (Verts/ALE) and Bogusław Liberadzki (S&D)

New European energy supply policy calls for an integrated and diversified system for the sources and means of gas delivery. As part of that policy, Poland plans to build an LNG sea-land terminal in Świnoujście. The terminal is scheduled to be operational by 2014 and is expected to be able to handle 5 billion m3 a year, which would amount to no more than 25 % of Polish consumption.

Does the Commission agree that this terminal would make a positive contribution to the abovementioned goal of diversifying gas supply? Does the Commission see any reason to question this project: e.g. because it could be perceived as a competitor to Nord Stream?

According to information from Poland, all environmental standards will be met. Does the Commission agree with that assessment? Is the Commission aware of German objections to the project on purportedly environmental grounds? Does the Commission intend to help finance this project?
