Question for written answer E-7863/2010
to the Commission
Rule 117
Dan Jørgensen (S&D)

Subject: Conditions for dogs in animal shelters in Europe
 Answer in writing

The Danish NGO ‘Spanske Hunde’ (Spanish Dogs) has drawn my attention to the very poor treatment of dogs in public animal shelters in Spain. The animals are given no veterinary treatment, even when they have been badly harmed, e.g. in road accidents, and are routinely destroyed after a few days.

I have also been informed about the terrible conditions suffered by feral dogs in Bulgaria. The mayor of Haskovo, Bulgaria, permits dogs to be kept in inhumane conditions in huts without food or drink, often resulting in their death.

If this is true, does the Commission consider that this conflicts with EU animal protection legislation?

Does the Commission have any idea how dog shelters in the EU are generally run? Is the welfare of the animals properly ensured?

Does the Commission intend to put forward any legislation in this area?
