Answer given by Mr Dalli on behalf of the Commission

The Commission would refer the Honourable Member to its answers to Written Questions E‑3787/09 and E‑6868/10[1] which address the issues of illegal trade in pets and their protection during transport.

In addition, it is worth noting that the Belgian Presidency has raised the issue of welfare of dogs and cats in the Council. The Commission will follow this debate with interest in the framework of the preparation of its future EU strategy for the protection and welfare of animals foreseen for December 2011.
