The Spanish greyhound

Rule 117
Ashley Fox (ECR)

I have been contacted by residents in the south-west of England who are concerned about the treatment of the Spanish greyhound, or ‘Galgo’, at the end of the racing and hunting season. Most Galgos are owned exclusively to compete in one of the two seasons, with those deemed ‘worthless’ at the end of the season being destroyed or thrown out.

Please could the Commission advise me what steps they are taking alongside the Spanish authorities to ensure that animal welfare legislation is not being breached in the dogs’ treatment, both during and after the racing and hunting season?
