A year has passed since the Vancouver 2010 Olympics — an event that will certainly not be remembered for the Canadians' organisational abilities — and once again negative reports are emerging. 100 husky sled dogs have been found buried in a mass grave, considered to be surplus to requirements after having been used for the Olympic Games, following the drop in tourism and tourist demand for sleigh rides.

The international community and the European Union, through the European Olympic Committee, should ensure that the Olympics are held in countries which comply with international laws, including those on animal protection.

1. Is the Commission aware of the situation?

2. Will it commission a study on the post-Olympic situation in the countries concerned, in terms of economic and social rehabilitation and the reintegration of animals used during the Olympic Games?

3. With a view to trade agreements with Canada or with other third countries, would it be possible to include a chapter on trading in animals that are likely to be killed in their countries of origin for non-compliance or because they were simply surplus to requirements?
