Gaddafi admits wave of illegal immigration to Europe

Question for written answer E-002902/2011
to the Commission
Rule 117
Nuno Melo (PPE)

In an interview with the French newspaper Journal du Dimanche, Muammar Gaddafi threatens to unleash a flood of illegal immigration unless the Weston countries help him fight the revolt.

The Libya leader declared that ‘thousands of people will invade Europe from Libya and no-one will be able to stop them’.

Gaddafi once again blamed Al-Qaeda for the uprising, adding that Europe would have to face an Islamic jihad ‘on its doorstep’ in the Mediterranean.

What is the Commission's interpretation of Muammar Gaddafi's remarks?

What measures have been agreed to prevent a possible flood of illegal immigration into the EU?

How can it be ensured that any such measures, justified though they may be, will not jeopardise necessary humanitarian aid for the victims of the dictatorial regime in Libya?
