Parliamentary question - E-003067/2011(ASW)Parliamentary question
E-003067/2011(ASW)

Answer given by Mr Dalli on behalf of the Commission

The implementation of Regulation (EC) No 1523/2007 banning the placing on the market and import to, or export from, the Community of cat and dog fur, or products containing such fur[1] is primarily under the responsibility of the Member States and they have in particular the means to decide to increase the checks and the penalties if necessary.

However the Commission intends to collect information from Member States on the level of enforcement of the regulation.

The information will be used in order to prepare, by the end of 2011, a report on the state of play of the application of the ban on cat and dog fur to the European Parliament and the Council.

On the basis of the report, the Commission will examine whether additional EU measures are necessary.
