E-004017/2011(ASW)
Answer given by Mr Dalli on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-004017/2011

The Commission is not aware of the situation mentioned by the Honourable Members.

The Commission does not provide support measures targeted to dog shelters in Italy.

Apart from transport(1), there is no EU rule that governs the welfare of dogs and cats and, as a consequence, the Commission has no specific role regarding the way animals' shelters are managed by the competent authorities.

(1)Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport (OJ L 3, 5.1.2005).
