PNR — false data

Question for written answer E-007912/2011
to the Commission
Rule 117
Martin Ehrenhauser (NI)

By analysing air passenger data, it is aimed to fight international terrorism and organised crime more effectively.

As the relevant data are collected and administered by airlines and tour operators, the possibility of errors occurring when inputting data and of incorrect information being given cannot be ruled out.

1. Is the Commission aware of any cases of people wrongly coming within the radar of the investigative authorities because of incomplete or false information contained in PNR data? If so, how many?

2. In the Commission's view, what measures need to be taken in order to prevent innocent citizens from being suspected on the basis of false information contained in PNR data?

3. What is the error rate in the 19 categories of data proposed by the Commission for EU PNR data, with a breakdown by category?
