Question for written answer E-009337/2011
to the Commission
Rule 117
Derek Vaughan (S&D)
An international campaign involving a number of animal protection charities across the EU has highlighted instances of barbaric animal cruelty taking place in Ukraine and the lack of protection given to animals by Ukrainian authorities.
Particular concerns have been raised in relation to methods being used to reduce and control the animal population, mainly stray cats and dogs, in Ukraine's major cities.
The European Union has a long-standing opposition to animal cruelty.
1. Can the Commission explain its view on the concerns that have been raised?
2. Has the Commission had any discussions on this issue with the Ukrainian Government, and if so, can the Commission outline the outcome of those discussions?
