Ukraine’s animal welfare record has in recent times been subject to scrutiny by international animal welfare advocates and faces a number of allegations regarding the standard of animal care in Kyiv Zoo and the poisoning of stray dogs in Kyiv municipality.

A meeting with Ukraine’s President Yanukovych to address outstanding issues regarding the Association Agreement was recently postponed. Does the Commission intend to investigate and take into account Ukraine’s animal welfare record before deciding whether to allow Ukraine free trade and visa-free travel within the EU?
