Inhumane practices in Ukraine as part of preparations for the Euro 2012 football championship

Question for written answer E-010213/2011
to the Commission
Rule 117
Niccolò Rinaldi (ALDE)

It has been brought to light that as part of preparations for the Euro 2012 football championship the Ukrainian authorities have ordered the slaughter of stray dogs and cats. They have even acquired a mobile crematorium furnace with which to burn alive all stray dogs and cats found on the streets. This practice is so barbaric that it must be stopped immediately, particularly as there are other ways to address the problem of stray animals.

In light of Article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which states that ‘the Union and the Member States shall, since animals are sentient beings, pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals’, and the Written Declaration of the European Parliament in response to ‘extreme measures against stray animals’, will the Commission give consideration to this problem?

Will the Commission take action in the event that these practices are not immediately stopped?
