E-010483/2011(ASW)
Answer given by Mr Dalli on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-010483/2011

1. The Commission is aware of some allegations concerning trade of stray dogs not in compliance with EU and national animal health rules, but it does not have precise data on the size of this trade or the number and severity of non-compliances.

2, 3, 4. There is no EU legislation on the protection of stray dogs, on sterilisation and registration of dogs. The way Member States implement national legislation on these matters is not under the competencies of the EU and remains under the sole competence of the Member States.

5. The Commission is not aware that dogs and cats are illegally slaughtered for petfood production.
