The European Gendarmerie Force (EGF) is not an EU body. The European Commission has no involvement in or competence for the missions, tasks, internal organisation or operations of EGF. The Commission is therefore not in a position to provide details of these matters, including aspects concerning the EGF's budget or weapons procurement.
The European Gendarmerie Force is an initiative of five EU Member States (France, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Italy) and was established by a treaty between those countries on 18 October 2007. Their stated intention was for membership of the EGF to be open to those EU Member States which have a national police force with military status. In 2008 Romania jointed as the sixth member.
