Answer given by Mr Potočnik on behalf of the Commission
17.7.2012
The Commission is aware of the problems caused by the use of poisoned baits in Europe. Both the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive explicitly prohibit such methods, along with other similarly non-selective and dangerous practices. The implementation and enforcement of the abovementioned legislation is a responsibility of the Member States authorities. The Commission, aware that the illegal use of poison represents one of the biggest conservation problems for some endangered species, has been funding several LIFE projects which have directly addressed this problem (‘Innovation against poison’[1], ‘Antidoto’[2], ‘Veneno No’[3]). The outcome and experience obtained from these projects will help find possible and more effective ways to tackle the problem of poisoned baits in Europe.
