As the Honourable Members may be aware, at its meeting on 5 June 2014[1], the Council reached a political agreement on the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Directive 96/53/EC of 25 July 1996 laying down for certain road vehicles circulating within the Community the maximum authorised dimensions in national and international traffic and the maximum authorised weights in international traffic.

The new draft Directive aims to amend the current Directive of 1996 in order to improve those vehicles' aerodynamics, fuel efficiency and road safety.

This political agreement was reached after five months of negotiations between Member States. During that period, the Council examined and took into consideration all the relevant facts and arguments concerning the different aspects of the proposal.
