VP/HR — Somaliland

Question for written answer E-006540-14
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
James Carver (EFDD)
The Vice-President/High Representative has previously indicated that she does not recognise the independence of Somaliland (see answer to Written Question E‐004627/2012). The government of Somaliland has enacted effective governance of the region since 1991, when a grassroots conference of clan leaders and members pushed for independence. Somaliland is largely recognised as the most democratic state that has ever existed in the Horn of Africa, but a lack of international recognition continues to hinder its development.
Given the democratic nature of Somaliland and the popular support for independence among its people, will the Vice-President/High Representative revise her current position?
