Question for written answer E-009011-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Georg Mayer (NI)

Subject:  Association Agreement with the Republic of Moldova
 Answer in writing

With this Association Agreement, the European Union has driven the Republic of Moldova into a situation that has already caused the Republic damage to a value of many millions of euros. The sanctions imposed by Russia are only the beginning of a looming economic disaster in Moldova. The Association Agreement obliges the EU to provide financial support to the Republic of Moldova. Moldova’s energy supply is 100% dependent on Russian natural gas. Should Russia decide to halt supplies of natural gas to Moldova, this would result in a situation similar to that seen in Ukraine a few weeks ago.

1. What is the estimated cost to the EU of compensating/alleviating the economic damage that has occurred in the Republic of Moldova?

2. What will be done to prevent the suspension of visa extensions for Moldovan migrant workers in Russia from driving the 300 000 Moldovans who hold Romanian passports onto the EU labour market?

3. Are products made in the Republic of Moldova in any way competitive in the EU internal market in terms of their quality and compliance with standards, and will the EUR 1.15 billion that the Republic plans to spend on enhancing competitiveness be enough for it to hold its own against other countries in the internal market?
