 Subject:  Sugar-sweetened beverages
 Answer in writing 

A study published by the School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University, in Boston (Massachusetts), estimates that, globally, 133 000 deaths from diabetes, 45 000 from cardiovascular disease, and 6 450 from cancer are attributable to the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. These findings confirm the estimates published by the American Heart Association in Dallas in 2012, which put a figure of 180 000 on the deaths linked to sugary drink consumption.

Sugar-sweetened beverages are soft drinks made from water, sugar, and flavourings, and they may also contain carbon dioxide, colourings, or plant extracts. The sugar content ranges between 70 grams and 120 grams per litre. These beverages are found in nearly all schools and are drunk quite freely. The World Health Organisation and other bodies, for example the European Heart Network, have been calling for a limit to be set for sugary drink consumption.

How does the Commission view the above figures and will it work towards measures to discourage sugary drink consumption, with particular emphasis on younger age groups?
