to the Commission
Rule 130
Lidia Senra Rodríguez (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  Expansion of the Reganosa plant in Ferrolterra
 Answer in writing

What happened this summer in Tianjin, China, should alert us to the threat that the Ferrol Estuary Emergency Citizen Committee (CCERF) has been warning us about for years: Reganosa’s gas power station — illegal, following a ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court in 2012 — represents a deadly threat to the people living in the Ferrol estuary area.

The power station is located less than 200 m from the settlement of Mehá, 800 m from the military arsenal, 900 m from the village of Mugardos and next to the Forestal del Atlántico petrochemicals complex, which stores around 300 000 m3 of fuel and chemical products. The explosive potential of this facility is 85 000 times the force of the most powerful of all the explosions that took place in Tianjin.

Despite this, Reganosa developers have recently been producing designs for the expansion of the facilities, with the support of the Galician Regional Government.

Reganosa has announced that European bodies have awarded it funding. In view of this, is the Commission aware that it is funding and legitimising the activities of ships transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the estuary, thereby contributing to increased LNG operations there and more activity by a gas power plant that threatens the population of Ferrolterra county?
