E-002671/2016(ASW)
Answer given by Mr Vella on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-002671/2016

The Commission is not aware of any ongoing official plans for the establishment of a satellite launch facility in the island of El Hierro or Gran Canaria. Therefore, the Commission is not in a position to express a view on the compatibility of these possible plans with EU environmental legislation, and notes that the development of satellite launch facility is not a priori prohibited under the EU environmental legislation. Should these plans go ahead, the Commission expects the Spanish authorities to comply with all the relevant EU environmental legislation.
