Question for written answer E-004631-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Franz Obermayr (ENF)

Subject:  Islamists and anti-Semites in Parliament at the invitation of the S&D Group?
 Answer in writing

On 24 May 2016, at the invitation of the European Muslim Initiative for Social Cohesion (Emisco) and the S&D Group, a High Level Working Session took place in the European Parliament on ‘Muslim communities' response to extremism’. A Commission representative was also present.

Speakers included Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham (Emisco Chair), a British politician expelled from the Labour Party in 2013, apparently for having made anti-Semitic remarks(1). Many Turkish associations and pro-AKP lobby groups, such as UETD(2), are listed as co-organisers, as are Femyso, a group repeatedly named as being a member of the extremist Muslim Brotherhood organisation(3). The Commission was represented by Dr David Friggieri, Coordinator on combating anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

1. Did the Commission provide funding for the event?2. Is the Commission aware that Lord Nazir Ahmed was expelled from the Labour Party following accusations of anti-Semitism?3. Is the Commission aware that the organisers included Islamist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood?
