Parliamentary question - E-005022/2016(ASW)Parliamentary question
E-005022/2016(ASW)

Answer given by Mr Andriukaitis on behalf of the Commission

1. The definition of ‘engineered nanomaterial’ as laid down in Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011[1] on the provision of food information to consumers, which has been included in Regulation (EU) 2015/2283[2] on novel foods, refers to intentionally manufactured nanomaterials and therefore, excludes other nanomaterials (e.g. natural nanomaterials). No further definition is provided in those regulations as regards the term ‘intentionally produced’.

2. It is the responsibility of the Member States to monitor and control that the requirements of the EU legislation have effectively been enforced.

3. Article 18(3) of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 requires that only engineered nanomaterials shall be clearly indicated in the list of ingredients.
